He worked as a Sugar Broker, first for Kerr & coy and then for McLood & Coy, finally setting up his own business. Tragically drowned at an early age on an inspection visit to the plantations. Was Hon., Amercian Consul in Nlola in 1808, the time of the Philippine Revolution, when their house was destroyed by fire, and as a result they lost "their all" including the family papers. They and their children, Maggie, Mary and Charles were rescued by the Americans and put on board to the warship "NEWPORT". According to his wife he was visited in Nlolo by one of this brothers - probably Hugh Lyon Playfair Chiene, from Portland, Oregon (the dates fit).

Note

They were dressed in black for the weeding.
It was a Spanish tradition that when ever someone close died they had to dress in black for months.
As someone had recently died they had to marry in black.

Note

Maria stayed on at Nlolo after Charles Morgan Chiene died and brought up the five children. Freddie was born 3 months after his father's death. At the time of the Japanese Invasion of Manila, all of Charles Morgan's children and Dottie were interred at the P.O.W. camp at Santo Tomas for 3 years. However, Dora and gordon Eady were interred with The British Consulate Staff as he had been recalled by the Admiralty and attached to the British Consulate as Shipping Advisor. They were released by Diplomatic Exchange in 19442. The others were liberated by the American First Cavalry Division in 1945.

Soon after tat Walter and Jane Chiene were visited by Maggie, Patrick and Dorothy (Dora) and Jessie with her child, Isabel. Jane has a photograph of this visit. They went onto San Francisco (U.S.A) where Dottie worked in the British Consulate until they returned to Manila in 1947.
