Note

Emigrated to America, when the Major, his father gave him a large sum of money. He settled in Yankton, South Dakota where there was a considerable colony of English and Scotsmen. He had qualified in Engineering at Edinburgh University like his father, and he married Florence Sugden from Manchester, England. While Charles went out to the Phillipines (qv) Hugh and John chose the United States. Hugh had the idea of being a gentleman farmer, but that failed, so, leaving his brother John, he went to join Charles in the phillipines at Iloilo, where he was running a sugar plantation. He was joined by his wife and his two sons in the phillipines, and when the boys became of school age, they and their mother returned to U.S.A. for the furtherance of their education. It was 7 years later before the family was reunited, owing to the impact of the Spanish American War. That was 1898 so he would be about 46 then. he and his wife both died in Portland Oregon in 1922. he had a reputaion of never being very comminicative about his ancestory. Perhaps indicative of the suggested possible quarrel.
