His early days seem to have corresponded with those of his elder brother Walter Sugden Chiene. He was a gifted mechanic, he was engineer for the American Laundry Company in Portland, Oregon, until his early death at the age of 43 in 1926. This makes it difficult to get much information about him. His son was only 6 when he died and his daughter just 1. His wife Anne Fraser died in 1975 so in the main we have to rely on her younger sister's recollections. She writes in 1980: "He died when I was 11 and I have the most indelible memories of him as one of the dearest people in my life - he meant so much to me. He was an outgoing person, everyones' favorite neighbor, beloved friend to many. He had three major hobbies, friends and family; his 1912 Model T Ford car with brass trim, hand crank, hand windshield wiper - a car which he personally kept in tip-top condition and which was still the family car at the time of his death in 1926; and the beautiful family garden, a neighbourhood showpiece. He was never happier than at the times the Model T was filled with camping equipment, good food, family and friends - off for an outing". He met his wife Annie Fraser (who had come from Nova Scotia to work in Portland) at the home of mutual friends where they were both staying pending permanent location. Their two children and their families are dealt with next. Citation details: page 76 |
