Educated at Edinburgh Academy (see Appendix III) apprenticed to Chiene and Tait C.A., qualified as a C.A., in 1927 was President C.A., Students society 1927 - 28. Joined the Edinburgh Investment Trust in 1926. Secretary 1929 - 39, Manager 1939 - 46, Director 1946 - 74, Chairman 1963 - 74.

Was called up as a reservist on the outbreak of hostilities in 1939 (having served as a Territorial 1922 - 26 and then transferred to reserve). Staff Captain 155 Inf. Bde - to France and back again for one week after Dunkirk. Attended Staff College Camberly and thereafter posted as D.A.Q.M.G. Ops & Trg, South Eastern Command, thence (after second staff course) to grade one appointment in Movement Control, War Office, after 6 months was appointed Deputy Director of movements (overseas personnell) with the rank of Col., till demobilisation on VE day 1945. As a member of EPS (The Executive Planning Staff) who devilled for the Directors of Plans who in their turn were responsible to the Chiefe of Staff; attended the so called "Big three" conference at Washington, Quebec, Cairo and Yalta, also visited Cairo and Washington as leader of separate smaller missions.

He returned to civil life as manager of the Edinburgh investment Trust and joined the Board of The Scottish Tea and Lands Coy of Ceylon and The Investors Mortgage Coy, of both of which he became Chairman in due course. In 1949 while retaining his seat on the Board of The Edinburgh Investment Trust, became Chief Administrative Office for the U.K., operations of Distillers Corporation, SEagrams (Canada) Inc. In his 13 years of this appointment visited USA, Canada and Jamaica, supervising the construction of Chivas Brothers new Strathisla - Glenlivet distillery and their new headquarters, warehouses and bottling plant at Paisley.

Was also a Director of Browlee & Coy Timber Merchants and Scotcros and industrial holding company both located in Glasgow. Is still a Director of Wilkie & Paul (packaging and plastics) in Edinburgh.

Was a member of The Speculative Society (1928 - 30) President (1931 - 32), a debating society which does not usually extend its privileges to those outside the "law", and a Monk of St. Giles, a rhyming dining club. The University Club and subsquently The New Club until he retired. Also a member of The Hon. Coy of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield, and an HHonorary member of The Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society, played golf for Edinburgh University 1923 - 24, was on the council of the Lothians Golfing Association and a representative thereof to The Scottish Golf Union, amember of The Seniors Golfing Society and The Pirates. A governor of The Edinburgh Academy, Chairman of The Executive Committee and as such involved for 3 years in the planning and construction of the New Preparatory School at Kinnear Road.

Was Ho., Treasurer of the Boy Scouts for Scotland, convenor of the finance Committee of the West Edinburgh Unionists Association and on the committee of the Association of Investment Trusts.

Married Muriael Delphine Fraser, daughter of Josh S. Fraser aural surgeon Edinburgh and Melanie Von Bouvard from Vienna. Two children, Elisabeth Ann who married Garth Gould a leading solicitor in Christchurch, New Zealand - Wayne, Neave and Coy - they have three children, and John Chiene Jnr., a Cambridge Golf blue who is now senior partner in Wood, mackenzie & Co., Stockbrokers, London and Edinburgh, whose rapid advancement over the last 10 years in that profession has been a phenomenal achievement. When the history of that firm comes to be written someday as I hope it will, that will be a great story. He married Anned Hopkins from Wales, who had been Personal Secretary to the Chairman of "Shell". They have 2 children, a girl and a boy, David.
