Note

At the same time as his fathers will he made a will leaving what he would inherit under his fathers will, equally between his two bothers David and George (see ilustration on source).

From the above it would appear that the "family business", lay with the direct line; William his younger brother and the fourth son seems to have been a "wild boy", (see note on family tree) and Robert whose issue were mariners is the subject of a separate family tree, which is attached and on which I have noted the sources of information therein: Alenander, who is more important as the progenitor of many, is dealt with subsequently.

Young John Chiene (he describes himself as 'Jnr' in his will) was known to the family as "Old Times" presumable owing to his advanced age of 98. No details are known of Mary Duncan whose death in 1784 meant "Old Times" spent some 37 years as a widower. His copy of "The Universal Scots Almanack" for 1774 still exists and is a valuable source of information of that year; it also contains "Old times" own entries. (one can be view in the source)

There used to be a story that "Young Times" said to his father "MR. Cournfoot (the farme) is a bad man". On being asked why, replied "Because he says damn".
