Not much is known of him, except that according to Erskine Beveridge he was carried to his grave by 8 of his sons. Did Peter predecease him and was it only 7 of them? Agnes Reid of Broadlay near Sauchope who he married came from a Crail family. The family tomb is at Crail and they were inter-married with the Luns. The earliest records of the Reid family in the Crail records are dated 1552. A copy of John Chienes will of 1763 is annexed (in the source). In this he bequeaths "the lot" to this first three lawful sons, John, David and George apart from family effects, the share he had in the ships, "The Generous betty" and "Scots Tarbet" of Crail, also his own boats and fishing nets etc. He was 75 when he made his will and his sons were about 40. There is a codocil to the will dated, 1770 which is difficult to decipher, but might have disposed it all to John Jnr. He was however the father of three men, from whom the main family lines developed. Citation details: page 31 |

|
John Chiene's will written 1763 left everything to his first three "lawful sons" |
